Costa Rica is roughly the size of Vermont and New Hampshire side-by-side (about 0.03 percent of the world’s land mass) – but, astonishingly, it has more than five percent of the world’s total biodiversity! Costa Rica sustains 12 distinct microclimates that support over a half million different species: 900 birds, over 250 mammal, 220 reptile, 160 amphibians, tens of thousands marine animal and hundreds of thousands of invertebrate species.

These natural treasures are protected by one of the most complete networks of National Parks in Latin America – 25 percent of Costa Rica’s land is preserved and easily accessible for all to enjoy.

Great hiking and vibrant wildlife are waiting for us at the park as the opportunity to admire the boiling mud pods, natural hot springs, and stunning views of the Volcano itself. Incredible wildlife can be spotted within the park, such as Spider Monkeys, Howler Monkeys, Keel-billed Toucans, and Iguanas are a variety of Birds and other reptiles.

This morning we are heading towards the cost, our main goal there is to be as close to the Olive Ridley Turtles. Our home away from home for the next three nights will be” La Lagarta Lodge” This beautiful boutique hotel is very close to one of the largest if not the largest Olive Ridley Turtle nesting sites on the planet. The lodge also has a beautiful nature preserve with abundant wildlife for us to enjoy. There is a logistic dynamic we must deal with since the “Arribada” which means “mass nesting event” is an unpredictable natural phenomenon. For that, we have a scout on the nesting beach that informs us when the event is about to happen, and in 25 minutes by car, we can reach the beach. Is prohibited for tourists to go stand there waiting for the event to happen. The reason for us to be there for three nights is to maximize our chance to hit the “Arribada.”
Again, this is a natural phenomenon, and it is completely unpredictable, it may happen while we are there but might as well be the opposite.

This morning we drove to the Tenorio Volcano National Park. One of the main attractions of the park besides its unique wildlife is the color of the water of the rivers that run through the area we will be at. Teal color to turquoise is the most fascinating effect that different elements produce in the water. Among other creatures we can find in our walk are Monkeys, Agouties, and Coati Mundis as well as spectacular butterflies, different species of lizards and frogs can also be found. Later in the day, we will explore “El Valle de Tapir” This will be a night hike is search of a whole new world of tropical creatures including the charismatic Central American Tapir, the largest land mammal in the tropical rain forest.

In the afternoon we well explore another sector of the park on foot to add to the list of many species harder to find in water habitats.
